Hi Anna, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I suppose my optimism comes from everything I’ve been through. One of the most challenging periods of my life was when my family lost everything in a house fire. Coming away from that I could have gone quite dark, but I chose to be grateful for what was left and to see how resilient and beautiful my family was. I realized from a young age that things don’t matter, people matter. You can rebuild from nothing and choose every day to be the good in the world.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an actress and the owner of a design and film studio, and honestly, everything I do comes back to storytelling. Performing was my foundation, so I’ve always loved diving into characters and connecting with people through stories. Over time, I wanted to take that love for creativity a step further and build something of my own, which led to starting my studio.
The studio is such an exciting space because it combines everything I’m passionate about. I get to work on branding and design for clients, which is so fun because every project is unique. And then there’s the film side, where I get to act, direct, coach, and help bring bigger projects to life. No two days are ever the same, which keeps things exciting.
Right now, I’m thrilled about being on the newest season of “Outer Banks” on Netflix. It was such a fun experience to work on a show that so many people love, even if it was just a small part. At the same time, my studio is growing, and I’m diving into more film production projects, which has been a dream of mine for a while.
What I hope people take away from my work is that it’s about more than just creating something that looks great, it’s about telling meaningful stories and connection. Whether it’s a brand design or a film, I want it to feel authentic and impactful. I look forward to every new project and I’m grateful for the opportunity to live what I love!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my niche I would say: being resilient, adaptable, and creative.
Resilience is key, especially in acting. You are constantly rejected, and unfortunately there are unkind people in the industry on all sides. But, being confident in yourself and interpreting your “no’s” as constructive criticism will keep you working. So, for anyone starting out, find ways to stay grounded: lean on your support people, find an outlet other than acting to get creative energy out, and love yourself.
And then, to go along with that, there’s adaptability. Nothing ever goes exactly as planned, so staying flexible with your emotions and expectations is vital. Learning a new role, pivoting in business, or taking up a new skill to keep up with the competition, it keeps you fresh and exercises your mind. If you’re starting out: don’t be afraid to say yes to things that scare you, it keeps life fun!
Creativity is obvious for those looking to get into branding or acting. It drives everything I do, whether I’m acting, designing, producing, or even parenting. For those starting out in a creative industry, don’t be afraid to try new things, take risks, learn from people who inspire you, and stay curious. Do your best to view the world through as many perspectives as possible- my children have taught me so much it’s been humbling.
At the end of the day, it’s about showing up, learning as you go, and staying open to experiences. You’ve got this.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Okay, this is a bit of a heavy one.
In the summer of 2023, I started my company while pregnant with my daughter. Things were going well until her 20-week ultrasound, when we discovered she had a velamentous cord insertion (a less-than-ideal umbilical cord placement) making the pregnancy high-risk. My initial medical team delivered the news in a frightening way, pushing invasive tests and potential bed rest, which sent me spiraling. (Spoiler alert: we’re both absolutely fine.)
Now, I am extremely fortunate to have a Herculean intuition, and a sister who is an ob-gyn who helped me find an amazing new care team. They reassured me that things weren’t as dire as they’d seemed. Still, the pregnancy and first year were tough as we unfortunately faced more medical issues that just seemed never-ending. I was managing a toddler, a baby, and a business, all while battling anxiety and living in constant fight-or-flight made everything harder.
The turning point came when a pediatrician took a pause to acknowledge my efforts and saw my daughter for who she was: a healthy, happy baby exceeding her milestones. Yes, she’s small, but, as Shakespeare said, “though she be but little, she is fierce.”
The past year tested me in extreme ways, but it taught me to trust myself, live in the moment, and to love deeply and to let those I love feel that. And I learned an important lesson from my daughter: we are limitless.
